Here are the 4 S’s to remember when it comes to CV:
- Simple
- Structured
- Succinct
- Significant
The composition of your CV is quite simple:
- Academics & Training – list of subjects, your results
- Employment History – make a list of your employment history β the company name, your job title, the dates you worked there, any promotions or achievements while you were there
You should make a list of your duties and responsibilities, and what transferable skills you have as a result and then follow that up with a measurable result (the effect). It is important to ask so what?
Here are a few examples:
If the description says, “help improve the efficiency of our support team,” you want something like this:
Performed comprehensive audit of support team processes, identified and addressed weak point which led to a 15% increase in resolution rates and saved our team an average of 10 hours per week
If the description says, “drive revenue growth for existing accounts,” you could say:
Implemented a new strategy involving X & Y which led to a lift of 10% across my book of business and resulted in beating my quota by 23%
This formula will showcase the exact amount of value that you bring to the table – recruiters will take notice and so will hiring managers.
You can point out that the monetary value you bring to the table is worth at least 20% and you’re confident you can deliver those results because you’ve done it before.
Getting past the Applicant Tracking System
Ideally, you want the bullet to match up with the criteria mentioned in the description of the role you’re applying
Did you know that over 85% of companies now use Applicant Tracking Systems which rank resumes according to skills, experience, and keywords. These tracking systems typically screen out over 50% of applicants before they make it to a real, live human being. Companies and their recruiters use the information from the ATS system to help them determine which candidates they bring in for an interview.
Moral of the story? If your resume isnβt optimized for the role you want, your chances of landing an interview are pretty low.
It’s important to identify the keywords that are repeated in the job description and use the most popular words in your CV the same amount of times they are includes in the job description
