We have created a few short simple steps for you to help your team drive inclusive behaviours in your startup.

Become aware of your biases

External research shows that awareness of unconscious bias can lead to reversals in biased outcomes, and understanding of the unconscious biases that underlie beliefs may be necessary for changing attitudes.

Harvard University has developed a series of Implicit Association Tests (the Harvard IAT) to enable individuals to discover any unconscious biases. These tests are online, open to all and free to use. Businesses are now using these and similar tests throughout their organisations to actively address the issues of unconscious biases.

Mitigate unconscious biases

Look for ways to involve yourself with groups who have different backgrounds outside your organisation. Look for opportunities to spend time with people who have similar skill sets but different working environments. This helps you avoid affinity bias which is the tendency to surround ourselves with similar people — people like you

Work on communication style

If people aren’t participating in events, meetings, social events — think about why. Simple tweaks in your communication style such as asking open-ended questions and inviting and accepting feedback can make your team members feel more inclined to share, thus strengthening feelings of inclusion.

Hold everyone accountable

Combatting unconscious bias isn’t about blame. It’s about accountability. Googlers are helping each other create a safe and respectful culture where everyone feels empowered and responsible to call it out. Slow down. Assume good intent. And understand that unbiasing is a process — the work is never complete — but everyone is responsible.
